Years ago, when my wife and I were dating, we used to go to the Nature Center at Stoney Creek. There was a place on the long trail, the Habitat Trail, that we both especially enjoyed. We called that place the "Big Woods". It was a woods that had such a thick canopy that little light made it to the ground. Consequently there was little undergrowth which made the trees look like columns in a gigantic cathedral. At the beginning of the trail leading through the woods were several large rocks. It was on these rocks we would sit, stare at the trees and talk. That was the inspiration for this painting, however, like a lot of my paintings it tended to go in a direction other than originally planned.

Many years ago we traveled to London, York and Edinborough. We spent about a week in each city. We were fortunate enough to get a room inside the walled city of York. In the walled city there is an area that is called the shambles. It consists of several streets on which all the buildings were built in the 1100's. They were all occupied and in use when we were there. You could almost stand in the middle of the road and touch the buildings on either side.

We see a group of young people sitting around a group of candles. They are using a substance, the smallest amount of which could brand them as felons and land them a 10 year prison term. A term longer than they could get if they had committed man slaughter. The war on drugs was then a war on the youth and the counter culture.

When I was a kid the family used to go down to my father's family near Lexington, Ky. At that time it was 2 lane black top and going through the heart of every town and city, all the way. It would take us almost all day to reach Cincinnati and the Ohio river. Over looking the Ohio river was a gas station we used to stop at every time we went down. I don't remember if we got gas but I do remember the long row of pop vending machine that stood outside. There must have been a dozen or more of them all selling a different type of soft drink. Everything from Nehi to Orange Crush, RC Cola to coke... and more that I can't recall right now,
