The Carolina Wren's "peabody, peabody, peabody" is a familiar song across the southeastern US. It is a common bird in urban areas, and is more likely to nest in a hanging plant than in a birdhouse. The Carolina Wren is a small buffy songbird with rust colored underparts. They keep their tail held upward. They've got a white eyestripe and they sing their fool little heart's out and their song is LOUD! The Carolina Wren sings a loud, repeated series of several whistled notes: "peabody, peabody, peabody". Other songs include a loud chatter and a rising and falling "cheer, cheer, cheer". These darling little birds are my personal favorite. Both sexes of the Carolina Wren are the same color. The male is just slightly larger than the female. Size: Only 5 to 6 inches in length Wingspan: 11 inches Weight: A mere 0.64 to 0.78 ounces The Carolina Wren's conservation status is "Abundant". The populations are stable or increasing with significant range expansion since the early 1900s.

This photo was taken in February, 2008 About the Cardinal: The brilliantly colored Northern Cardinal is the record holder as a state bird. In the US, the cardinal is the state bird of seven US states. The cardinal is commonly seen in winter at backyard, snow-covered bird feeders throughout the Northeast. Description: The cardinal is a medium-sized songbird with a large crest on the head. They have a heavy, conical red-orange bill and the face is surrounded by black. The male is a brilliant red. While the female is tannish with a red tail and wings. Both the male and female have a bright red-orange beak. Size: 8 to 9 inches in length Wingspan: 10 to 12 inches Weight: 1.5 to 1.7 ounces Upon arrival at my feeders, both male and female cardinals give a clear "chip" "chip" "chip" sound. All the while their tails go up and down with each "chip". I always know when they've arrived. Most songbirds have more than one song. The cardinal is no exception. They also sing a series of clear whistles, the first down-slurred and ending in a slow trill. "Cheer, cheer, cheer, what, what, what, what." The male cardinal is fiercely territorial. There are three males in the territory of my feeders. I love to watch them keep intruders away from "their" feeders. Cardinals are listed as a species of concern in California and may disappear there entirely due to loss of habitat.

Normally, I wouldn't consider any bug cute. But, this one's got something that just makes him the cutest bug EVER!! Not to mention how pretty his greeness is on my bright red gerber daisy!

This little guy's name is Recon Bennie. At the end of the season last year, Bennie Sr. was struck by a careless bicyclist and killed on his way to our home to collect seeds for his family. This little guy (or gal) is one of Bennie's offspring. He somehow knows that his parent met an early demise by bicycle because when he leaves the den to come to our home for seeds, he takes the long way, over hill and dale, ducking and dodging the entire way! You see him run up and over the hollow log, then partway up a broken tree to have an aerial view of the area. Back down the broken tree and along the edge of the fence, pausing at the end of the fence. Then he ducks behind the big tree trunk. As he comes out from behind the other side of the tree trunk he pauses again for a split second then he darts as fast as those four tiny legs can carry him over to the seed pile to stuff his cheeks so full they look like they're going to pop!! Then back he darts!!! Past the tree trunk and along the edge of the fence. Down over the ground, up and over the hollow log pausing momentarily at the post and rail fence that divides the property from the state park land. Quickly he darts over to his den with his little tail straight up in the air. He's definitely on a reconnaissance mission, so he is Recon Bennie! Seconds later he starts the entire trip over again. He carries this on throughout most of every day, all summer long as do the other families of chipmunks in the area. They all have their path or routine. Last year we figured that in one or another Chipmunk Den there had to be at least 80 lbs of seeds stored away! There may be more! We buy a 40 lb. bag of seed/month and that's just the black oil sunflower seed! These creatures are an absolute joy to watch and photograph! I love them, they're just adorable! I hope you find him as adorable as I do and that he makes you smile.

This was the first Robin of Spring 2008. This shot was captured on April 8, 2008. She was one busy little Robin too!! She threw dirt, twigs and leaf litter side to side as she searched for breakfast! Delightful little birds!

This is the first bunny in four years to find his way back to my yard and I'm just tickled pink that he's here. I'm hoping there are babies on the way! What a little cutie!
