The flowering of this plant is used to indicate when Native Bees 'Sugar-Bags' are ready for harvesting. It is a straggly but upright shrub growing in open forest in sandy soils. The leaves appear similar to holly with flattened stems and are thorny. Pods are smooth and flat. The flowers which appear in March are orange with yellow inner petals.
